Sweet Treats Brown/ Malva pudding

It’s that time of the year where you get to put your feet up and relax and what better way to do this than by having a scrumptious dessert! Not sure what to make this festive season? Don’t fret! You can try out our mouth-watering warm Brown Pudding also known as Malva Pudding. This well known and loved South African dessert is perfect for every occasion.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Illovo Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Illovo White Sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp apricot jam
  • 2 cups full cream milk

For the Brown Pudding Sauce:

  • 1 cup Illovo Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence


Method:

For the pudding:

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together white sugar, brown sugar and eggs, until light and fluffy.
  3. Stir in flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, vinegar, and apricot jam.
  4. Add milk and stir to combine. Spoon the batter into a greased ovenproof baking dish.
  5. Bake for 1 hour and test with a knife or knitting needle.
  6. If it comes out clean, it’s ready!
  7. Pierce the baked pudding several times with a fork.

For the sauce:

  1. Add all ingredients to a medium-sized saucepan and stir over medium heat.
  2. Bring to the boil and remove from the heat.
  3. Slowly pour the mixture over the hot pudding.
  4. Serve warm with your choice of cream or ice cream.
